As a small business owner, I deeply understand the vital role small businesses play in strengthening our neighborhoods. These enterprises create jobs, sustain families, and define the unique character of our communities. As Brooklyn Borough President, my focus will be on supporting small businesses and encouraging investment throughout the borough.
My office will explore ways to streamline regulations, reduce taxes, and address the overregulation that challenges local entrepreneurship. A proposed “Buy Local Brooklyn” campaign could enhance visibility for neighborhood shops through advertising on bus shelters, subway platforms, LinkNYC kiosks, social media, and at community events and board meetings.
To offer financial support, I would establish a small business common fund to provide targeted grants, helping businesses remain resilient and grow. Additionally, I will collaborate with landlords to address long-term vacancies and prevent blight by transforming empty storefronts into vibrant pop-up venues for start-ups, artists, and food vendors through short-term, affordable leases.
By exploring ways to reduce barriers, promote local commerce, and reimagine vacant spaces, my office will aim to foster a dynamic and resilient business environment in Brooklyn, uplifting our communities and supporting the vitality of local enterprises.
