As Brooklyn Borough President, I would commit to reducing housing costs while preserving the unique character of our neighborhoods.
To achieve this, I will launch a Brooklyn Homeownership Task Force focused on expanding first-time buyer programs. This initiative will work in collaboration with the Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD), local nonprofits, and credit unions to make homeownership more accessible. We will improve access to credit through financial literacy programs and credit repair workshops, and we will prioritize affordable ownership opportunities in new developments—especially for our city’s first responders and municipal workers.
Additionally, I would explore converting vacant or underused buildings and lots into affordable housing, ensuring these efforts consider the needs of various income levels, not just the extremes.
Another focus would be advocating for a fast-track system in housing court tailored for small property owners with one- to five-family homes. This approach could provide timely resolutions for issues like non-payment, lease violations, or illegal occupancy. Many small landlords hesitate to rent units due to the inefficiencies and unpredictability of the current system. Addressing these challenges could restore confidence and contribute to alleviating the housing crisis in Brooklyn.
